The Conjuring brings the scare

I saw the midnight showing of The Conjuring early this morning. I had low expectations and happy to say the film was very enjoyable. This is one of the best horror films that I've seen since Sinister in 2012. It stars the sexy Vera Ann Farmiga (from Bates Motel show) playing Lorraine Warren, who along with her husband Ed, are experts in demonology that help people who are experiencing paranormal events.

The Conjuring is rated "R" film but has no nudity or graphic language. Too be honest I don't scare easy, but I found the movie very creepy. The one scene of where the mom was thrown down a flight of stairs into a dark basement was a goose-bump moment for me. The Conjuring doesn't rely on gore but suspenseful moments of darkness, silence, creeping doors opening by themselves and those ungodly "bumps in the night".

The cast is very good and this helped to make the film one of the better horror films in recent times. James Wan's direction is solid. The film is shot brilliantly. I liked how the film is set in the Fall in October and November seeing fallen leaves adds to the experience. The doll scenes and hanging tree parts were equally spooky.

The possession scene was most disturbing when Ed was performing the exorcism and seeing the mom crawling the under belly of the house trying to kill her own child was insane to say the least.

I definitely recommend this film to anyone who enjoys a more traditional suspenseful horror film.

The Curse of Chucky DVD arrives in time for Halloween

There is a new Child's Play film coming out this October 8, 2013 just in time for all those who love watching horror movies around Halloween! The film is straight to DVD, and once again features Brad Dourif doing the voice of Chucky, the demonic doll as he did in the original classic film from the late 1980s. In this film instead of terrorizing a young boy and his mother, Chucky target is a young girl named Nica who is played by Brad Dourif's daughter, Fiona Dourifs.

Judging from the trailer it looks like looks like a return to the original Good Guys toy concept, from the first movie. The doll looks very close to the one from the original "Child's Play" movie.

From what I heard There's is another "Child's Play" remake in the works. I am guessing the movie studio probably just wanted to crank out something quick to get the Chucky Child Play brand franchise re-established with a current movie audience, prior to the reboot going into production.

This might explain the modest budget that went into Curse of Chucky, which doesn't bother me, I am looking forward to this DVD. Here is the artwork and trailer.

Spider-Man Meets the Bride of Dracula

Over the weekend I was browsing through Netflix, and found one of my favorite childhood cartoons, Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends, which starred Spider-Man, Iceman (who was originally part of the X-Men) and Firestar.

"Shop 2CoolGhouls"

One of my favorite episodes is The Bride of Dracula. It features classic movie monsters Dracula, Wolf Man and Frankenstein.
Episode starts off with Peter, Bobby and Angelica attending spring dance at the college they attend. A mysterious stranger asks to dance with Angelica and lures her outside with his charm. Bobby and Peter become jealous and suspicious of this unknown stranger. While outside the stranger put Angelica into a trance and later reveals himself to be Dracula and he proceeds to kidnap her, and takes her aboard a jet to Transylvania with help of the Wolf Man, who is one of Dracula's servants piloting the plane. Their final destination is Dracula's castle so he can make her his bride.

Bobby and Peter change into Spider-Man and Iceman and follow them to Transylvania by hitching a ride on a plane and they change its course to Transylvania. During the plane ride on Dracula's jet ( I didn't know Dracula's had his own jet) Angelica briefly snaps out from her trance, the bride to be is not happy by the idea of being Dracula's bride, and transforms into Firestar.

Dracula once again places her under his spell and when Spider-Man and Iceman arrive, he commands her to destroy them. Spider-Man manages to fight off the attack by reaching her subconscious. The ordeal takes it's toll and she passes out, turning back into Angelica. The duo then escape with her deeper into Dracula's castle. Having discovered Dracula’s laboratory, Iceman fends off Frankenstein (who is another one of Dracula's servants) and the Wolf Man as Spider-Man develops a potion to revive Angelica. She then transforms into Firestar and casts a blaze of sunlight throughout the castle, reverting everything back to normal. The trio return back to the spring dance.  You watch the episode below. The entire series is currently streaming on Netflix.

Werewolf The Fox TV Series

I recently discovered the ill fated Werewolf TV series that aired on Fox back in 1987. There was a 2 hour pilot that launched the show that would go on to air 28 half hour episodes before being cancelled in 1988.

"Shop Halloween at 2CoolGhouls"

The 1980s had lots of cool horror TV shows like Tales from the Darkside, Tales from the Crypt, Monsters, and Freddy's Nightmares just to name a few. Sadly Werewolf got lost in the shuffle it had a different twist on the Werewolf genre, The Werewolves didnt transform because of a full moon but they became aware of their transformation because a pentagram on their palm that was the only signal that the change was approaching. Kinda has a Incredible Hulk TV series feel when Bruce Banner stares at his hand when he is changing into the Hulk.

Werewolf centered around a college student named Eric Cord whose roomate is a Werewolf who end up biting Eric passing on the Werewolf disease to him. Show really had some cool special effects for its time. Soundtrack reminds me of Creepshow 2 lots of rock guitar and delayed whammy bar effects, so 1980s. Best parts of the show are the Werewolf vs Werewolf fights. I heard shout factory was going to release this series on DVD but it got cancelled for some reason due to licensing I heard. I hope it finally comes out. The only other Werewolf show right now is Teen Wolf on MTV.
